Book Review: House of Earth and Blood

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night-until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose-to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion-one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

HOEAB: Crescent City blew my mind. So many twists and turns. Sarah Maas once again has created a world full of wonder and magic.

Bryce is our main character, what kind of name is that? I was a little thrown back at first but quickly fell in love, not just her name but her personality. She is loyal and fierce. The depth to her feelings grew with every page. You do get a POV from a few of the other characters but have no doubt, this is Bryce’s story.

You also get to meet the moody angel Hunt, known as Umbra Mortis feared by all who cross his path, all except Bryce who’s own look can melt stone. And Ruhn, the Chosen one born with Starborn powers and possessor of the Starsword, Bryce’s older half-brother. Both men make strong appearances and have alpha personalities that push Bryce’s buttons on more than one occasion.

I was pulled to this book the whole time I was reading it. Many sleepless nights. Right when things might be starting to slow down more of Bryce’s past would come out, causing those sleepless nights.

There will be spoilers below, if you do not like them stop here 😉

Bryce is a half-fae half-human working as a glorified secretary at Griffin Antiquities. A party girl with her best friend Danika. Leader of the Pack of Devils and possibly even the next Prime. Both girls are living life to the fullest when one drunken night Bryce goes home to find Danika and her pack dead. And not just dead but brutally murdered. After finding her best friend in pieces she comes across the kristallos demon, thought to be Danika’s killer and gives chase.

This would have destroyed me finding my best friend, the one that you share everything with and love with all your heart, just gone, gone forever. Bryce is stronger than that or so she lets everyone believe.

2 years pass when Bryce is pulled into an investigation with Hunt. The kristallos is back and killing again, while no one can find out where it is coming from or what it wants. Hunt and Bryce must work together to find and stop this demon. For Bryce it is to face the one who killed her best friend. For Hunt it is the possibility of freedom. Hunt is not a free angel. He is owned by the republic and a slave to the archangels.

With Bryce and Hunt being thrown together they both want the same thing. To stop the killings. Their search is epic with many ups and downs. Trust is built and lost. I wasn’t expecting this book to make me cry, I was wrong. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good tear jerker but I was not expecting this and it hit me like a freight train. Reading with tears streaming down your face, trying to be quiet, watching Bryce’s heartbreak with the ultimate betrayal. This betrayal was also such a curve ball that I never saw it coming. In the end the light comes and all is revealed.

I am an avid fan of Sarah Maas. I have loved her previous books and am thrilled to add another story to my collection. I wait, impatiently, for the next installment of Bryce’s story and highly recommend this to everyone of all ages!
